Chelsea’s pursuit of a striker has gone very quiet compared to how it appeared at the start of the summer. But German transfer insider Florian Plettenberg has just given us a sniff of something interesting.
He says that Borussia Dortmund are “pushing” to sign Maximilian Beier, who they see as an ideal replacement for Niclas Fullkrug, who is on his way to Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea were interested in Beier earlier in the summer, and Plettenberg says that the Blues, along with Juventus and Aston Villa, are “still there,” although Dortmund now have “good chances” to beat them all to it.
“Decision soon,” he concludes. The 21 year old notched 16 goals and 3 assists in the Bundesliga last season, after two seasons in the second tier learning his trade as a teenager. He’s ready for his breakout, and it seems like someone is definitely going to take a punt on him this summer.
An interesting prospect
We’re really interest in Beier as a prospect, perhaps simply because we don’t know that much about him. It doesn’t sound like we’re chasing him too hard, but he’s certainly on our radar.
The price of €25m to €30m quoted by Plettenberg makes him sound even more interesting. That’s pretty cheap, given what we were being quoted for other players earlier in the summer.
Just 5 days ago, Plettenberg claimed that Chelsea and Villa had submitted “concrete offers” for Hoffenheim striker Beier, a bid which was clearly rejected. It seems we’re not prepared to go any higher, but you never know what might happen in the next 48 hours. At the start of the summer it seemed certain we wanted another forward, now our attentions seem to be elsewhere. Are we going to surprise everyone with a late sniper shot for young Beier? It feels unlikely.
Chelsea can’t only go for a striker should also get an experienced defender to replace Silva or even defenders.
