Chelsea want to sell 27 year old regular starter – but Man U interest not strong enough to make it happen

Chelsea have a lot of work on their hands in the coming weeks shifting the large group of players who need a loan or a permanent move to trim the squad down from it’s obscene current size.

The last thing they need is to be adding more players to the out tray, but that seems to be just what’s happening at the moment with Ben Chilwell.

Because he wasn’t taken to the Euros he was able to get a full preseason in with Enzo Maresca, and the fact that he’s been fit for a few months now made it seem like this would be his chance to shine. But for whatever reason – perhaps simply because his style of playing at left back is the opposite to how Maresca wants his full backs to play – he’s not been given a sniff.

Even with Marc Cucurella away, Chilwell struggled to pick up minutes of any kind, and in our final preseason friendly, when Cucurella was removed, it was Renato Veiga who came on to replace him.

Departure incoming – but a deal may be hard

This all points towards a Chilwell departure, an idea which is backed up by journalist Alex Crook for TalkSport.

He writes that Chilwell is a player to “keep an eye on” in the remainder of the window.

Talksport “understands he is assessing his options, and the Chelsea board are also unlikely to stand in Chilwell’s way if they receive a suitable offer between now and August 30.”

That’s probably not going far enough – if it’s clear that Chilwell isn’t in the coach’s plans, Chelsea would probably actively desire interest in Chilwell – although despite some

about Man U being interested, this very dry transfer market at the top end looks like it’s going to make any sale at an acceptable price hard.
