If you were to ask us one thing we’re worried about in tomorrow’s game with Man City, it’s the defence.
That’s not just because we’re playing Pep Guardiola’s all conquering side who are armed to the teeth with top quality attackers and are a well oiled machine in terms of taking teams apart – it’s just as much down to what we’ve seen Chelsea producing.
As Enzo Maresca’s team get used to their new coach and his demands, we’re going to see a lot of mistakes at the back. We already have, in preseason. Silly errors in our own box plus some dodgy pressing giving opposition players too much space in the middle has cost us dearly in the friendlies warming us up for the season.
But a better future ahead?
But there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Maresca’s Leicester last season had the best defensive record in the Championship. They conceded just 41 goals in 46 games, all told.
They had the second highest possession in the division, controlling the ball and controlling games and winning the title on the back of it.
Of course, Maresca was managing a squad that was on a whole other level to most of the teams he was facing, so perhaps we shouldn’t read too much into it. But still, one can see how effectively his style of possession dominant football can be defensively, when used correctly. Tomorrow will be a free hit – nobody expects us to beat City. But if we can make it through without some major defensive clangers, that will be a big step forward.
If the Italian coach is given enough time, he can hopefully take us all the way from the leakiest to the tightest back line in the league as the players adjust.
