Chilwell outcast, striker signed and goalkeeper picked – Chelsea down to 10 preseason problems

It’s been 3 days since we covered our rolling list of Chelsea’s issues they need to solve before the season starts. Have they ticked off 3 more issues?

We’re going to have to be very generous here. But given we’ve had the green light from Fabrizio Romano on Samu Omorodion, we can say they’ve sorted out a backup striker. We’ll even stretch and say that Filip Jorgensen playing 90 minutes against Real Madrid confirms he’s our number one.

Ben Chilwell got 0 minutes against Madrid, so can we say that they have “figured out” that he’s not really wanted or rated as a left back in this system? Perhaps. It’s hardly a resolution for his future, we can say pretty confidently that he’s not set to start the season as an important player if he can’t get on the pitch in these friendlies.

That is a pretty generous 3 to tick off, but things are really starting to accelerate on the transfer front now the players are from the USA, so we expect the next check in to be a little more fruitful in terms of outgoings, especially.

The 10 left

Here are the remaining tasks:

  1. Fix the sloppy defensive mistakes.
  2. Work out how to fit Christopher Nkunku into the front line.
  3. Decide on a midfield – Enzo and Caicedo and Dewsbury-Hall all in, with Lavia on the bench?
  4. Sell or loan Romelu Lukaku before things get even more awkward.
  5. Make a final decision on who gets the final precious loan slots.
  6. Any chance of a shirt sponsor?
  7. Can we shift Kepa permanently?
  8. Getting Cole Palmer back to fitness and figuring out where he fits into the team.
  9. Get Nicolas Jackson up to match fitness to be ready to start the season.
  10. Build some confidence with wins in our final friendlies.
