Fabrizio Romano's emphatic gesture.

€4.8m valued defender departs according to Romano exclusive – Chelsea can earn more in the future

Fabrizio Romano has just Tweeted out confirming an outgoing move from Cobham.

Young defender Bashir Humphreys was the talk of the town this time a year ago after impressing in preseason under Mauricio Pochettino. Signings made later in the window ended up pushing him out on loan, where he was able to play regularly at Swansea in the Championship.

Still just 21, the defender is now lined up for a loan move to Burnley which will be made permanent at the end of the season. Romano doesn’t name the fee, but Transfermarkt has him valued at €4.8m, and we’d expect we’re getting at least 10 for a young defender with bags of potential.

Romano writes that the Clarets see him as “a key defender for now and the future.”

We hope there’s some kind of sell on clause included too, especially if the fee is low. We can really see the youngster becoming a Premier League regular one day pretty soon, and this deal could end up looking cheap. We’re sure there’s some kind of arrangement like that, given it’s structed as a loan then a permanent move.

A great next step for another Cobham grad

It’s a nice move for Bashir really – we’re sure there will have been some Premier League interest in him as a rotation option or a potential starter for one of the newly promoted teams, but dropping down a division to establish yourself as a regular for a team expected to do well seems like the sensible option for his career.

Burnley are in a bit of an odd place following the departure of manager Vincent Kompany, but the parachute payments of regular trips to the Premier League should keep them competitive for years, and whether Humphreys ends up staying there long term or just uses them as a springboard, it’s a great next step for him.
