Enzo Maresca has reportedly already selected his two starting centre backs this season

New Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has reportedly already picked his preferred starting centre back partnership for the season ahead.

Obviously Chelsea have more competitions to play this season with the Europa Conference League and also the Club World Cup. So there should be plenty more game time available for players in the squad who might not be considered dead certs to start games in the league.

However, according to The Athletic, Maresca has chosen his two centre backs who will be his regular starters in the first team this season as long as they both stay fit and available to play.

Colwill has become an important player for Chelsea

Having a regular centre back pairing of players who know each other really well can be so important, and Chelsea and Maresca have chose Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill as that starting pairing for this season, as per the report at least.

There will be concerns over Fofana though, having missed an entire season with injury last season and has only got a handful of games under his belt this pre-season so far. He did start alongside Colwill in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Inter Milan in the final pre-season game of the campaign for The Blues, and he looked much more comfortable.

But Chelsea should be careful with him and bringing him back in. I am though, a real advocate for having a regular centre back pairing, I think that’s so important for the success of the team overall.

  1. Well, he’s the Coach but it’s One thing to make his choice and it’s another thing for his chosen ones to perform to the required standard. This is the EPL anything can happen.

  2. All that matters in Chelsea winning title this year is getting a clinical striker upfront to bang in the needed goals this season.
