Enzo Maresca is asked who his vice-captain is after Reece James handed armband

Reece James vs Wrexham.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been asked who his vice-captain is after last night’s defeat to Real Madrid saw Reece James handing over the armband when he came off.

Last season we heard from Mauricio Pochettino that Reece James was his official club captain, and left back Ben Chilwell was his official vice-captain of the club.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea will make SECOND Oscar Bobb approach, closing on Grabriel Mec!!

But Chilwell has barely been featuring this pre-season and there have been question marks about his future at the club. James has continued to take on the role of club captain, which looks to be a dead cert for the season. But with the Chilwell issue, the question of vice-captain is now a little more unclear.

Maresca speaks on it

James handed the captain’s armband to midfielder Enzo Fernandez when he came off in the Real Madrid defeat last night, but it seems that was a decision made by the player himself rather than the head coach.

As you can see above, Maresca was asked if Enzo Fernandez is his vice-captain after he took the armband from Reece James in multiple games.

He said: “He’s one of the important players. To be honest, I think when we changed Reece he gave the ‘bracelet’ to Enzo and this shows how Enzo is respected inside the squad. I think it’s quite clear.”

So it seems it’s a bit of a flexible situation depending on who is on the pitch at the time.

For me, I think Fernandez is a great pick to be captain as he has a lot of leadership qualities. If the squad are fine with it after the incident in the summer, then it works.
