Enzo’s big decision last night shows exactly what Chelsea’s plans are for problem position

What a whirlwind week for Filip Jorgensen.

Not long ago his name was just being mentioned seriously for the first time as a player Chelsea might be interested in as recently as the 22nd of July.

Here we are, on the 1st of August, and he’s already made his debut.

The move went through quickly in the last 7 days, and the Denmark youth international was rushed out to the USA for his medical so that he could be training with the team right away. After just two sessions with his new colleagues, he was given the second half of yesterday’s 3-0 win over Club America.

It was a very easy start for him as a Chelsea player, given they weren’t attacking much, but it was a good chance for him to get settled in. The reason for the rush is clear – Robert Sanchez wasn’t fancied by Mauricio Pochettino and it doesn’t look like Enzo Maresca likes him much either.

Rapid approach gives you all the clues you need about youngster’s future

Now that Jorgensen has had his debut, we expect more minutes to come. He should play at least half of Saturday night’s game against Man City, and we’ve then got games against Real Madrid and Inter Milan to finish our preseason run as we build up to the first game of the Premier League season on the 18th of August.

By then, we will surely know who Maresca’s first choice is – and barring anything going horribly wrong, Jorgensen would have to be favourite. There’s no reason they’d be rushing to drop him in at the deep end like this unless they were sure this match practice was building up to something.

As for Djordje Petrovic, who played more than half of last season as our first choice – let’s just say he chose a bad time to get injured.
