“I am optimistic heading into the new season” – Former Blue gives honest thoughts on Chelsea

Former Chelsea star Gary Cahill said he feels optimistic for the club heading into the new season and believes there’s a lot of talent in the squad.

It’s been another busy summer at Stamford Bridge and as well as a new manager in Enzo Maresca the Blues have made several signings in an attempt to strengthen the squad as they look to qualify for the Champions League next season.

If Maresca wasn’t fully aware of the task at hand he will be following the club’s pre-season tour of America which saw them win just one of their five games.

It was never going to be a smooth transition to Maresca’s style and to think everything would be fine after five games just isn’t realistic.

Despite the results, which ultimately don’t matter there were some positive signs that the players are getting to grips with what’s being asked of them and you can see a clear identity and style of play forming, which wasn’t the case last season.

The likes of Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto have all impressed on an individual level ahead of a huge season for the club.

Chelsea can’t afford to miss out on the Champions League for the third season running.

Chelsea simply can’t afford to miss out on the Champions League for a third consecutive season, and despite the obvious talent in the squad the Blues have been unable to deliver on the pitch for the past two campaigns.

It’s a big ask for Maresca but the quality is there to achieve it, and Cahill has said he feels optimistic ahead of the new season.

“I am optimistic heading into the new season,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“It is a young group so those experienced players have big roles to play. There is so much talent in the squad and you can see they are growing together.

“Hopefully, those players who were new to the league last year and were getting used to the expectation levels at a huge club like Chelsea, and getting used to the Premier League and all the different teams.
