“I think I’m ready” – 18 year old is pushing for first team place; explains who talked him into Chelsea move

The Daily Mail’s Kieran Gill is on the USA tour with Chelsea at the  moment, and he’s really making the most of it.

The journalist today got some really impressive access to Marc Guiu, the young striker, and through a translator got some of the most in depth content we’ve had from him since he arrived at the club earlier this summer.

The most important and pressing questions for the 18 year old were about his future. We’ve been on the hunt for a striker all summer to back up Nicolas Jackson, but when the £5m deal to sign Guiu was agreed, nobody was quite sure if that was to fill that spot, or to go on loan.

A month or so later, and we’re all still in the dark really – Guiu himself included. He’s taken advantage of Jackson’s injury to play in every friendly so far, and he’s looked super impressive, and perhaps more ready for first team action than we might have expected.

He certainly looks more physically ready than most 18 year olds to compete in the Premier League.

“I think I’m ready [for the Premier League]. We work very hard every day both on and off the pitch, on the physical aspect and the practical. So I think I’m ready to be on the pitch,” the former Barcelona player explained.

The signing process

The young Catalan also spoke a little about how he came to decide to come to Chelsea – a chat with manager Enzo Maresca seems to have convinced him, but he also talked to former Blue Juliano Belletti, who had worked with him in the Barcelona B team.

It was a huge gamble coming to Chelsea from your boyhood team just as you’re starting to break through – but if Guiu makes a first team impact this season he can consider it a good one.
