“I was so worried…” – Maresca says he expected defeat to Servette

Enzo Maresca has just taken his press conference after Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Swiss side Servette in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

It was an awful performance from his team in the end – admittedly a rotated team, but one more than strong enough to beat a mid-table team from Switzerland no matter the circumstances. There were shocking individuals showings, a lack of cohesion through the team, and almost nobody walked away with any credit.

But Enzo says he saw it coming:

“I think the first half an hour was comfortable and we had three or four chances to make it 2-0. Then we concede the goal and it’s normal to suffer a little bit. I was very worried about this game,” the coach explained.

“For them, it’s probably their biggest game of the season. This kind of game, you have many things to lose and not many things to win. This is why I was so worried yesterday and before the game.

Where to next

It was a second string, which takes the pressure off. All will be forgotten if we play well against Crystal Palace on Sunday and win. But this year’s midweek games in the Conference League are going to turn into a real drag if we don’t go up a level from this performance.

This was largely the same team that played Servette last week, so they should rapidly be building chemistry. It was the same back 5, so they have no reason to look so flimsy.

Let’s hope that more weeks on the training pitch help this alternate XI improve as a unit, otherwise our Thursday nights are going to be must-miss viewings.

We also wonder if it ends up sparking any late window activity from the transfer team, who must be concerned they have left this team short.

  1. This team stability from defence to offence . Don’t see them strong enough on defensive system . This team will be beaten by any team the way they played . Against wolves they conceded , lucky wolves play open games . I don’t think maresca has a good system of defence. This team needs a defensive midfielder with good height like cancelo. Look at other teams, man city has taller players at the back and in midfield. Look at man utd they acquired ugarte . Chelsea FC isn’t good enough in defence. They should play tosin regularly and bring in a new CB with good height and quality skillful player.
It’s only a blessing for this team to win trophies and qualify for UCL next season . I don’t see them a strong team the way they played . They are soft not strong enough to fight for the ball . I don’t think maresca tactics is good enough to bring this team to win the EPL or qualify for UCL . He try to rotate the players but not working . They’re lucky to goes through . They need rodri or cancelo at centre of midfield . They need to buy CB to play with Tosin . God bless this team. Chelsea FC buying a wrong player and wasting their money . How I wish Roman not been sanctioned . They should work out their defence. Look how real Madrid invest .

  2. not good enough., dire defending, no passion or committment.

Wolves were equally poor against us in the 2nd half,
therefore that was no true reflection of our team or reason for possitivity for play under Maresca.
    He is tactically naive.

Get ready Chelsea fans for another disappointing season.

Our defence is integral to our success, but Maresca isnt the man to change things, sadly.

Also bring in Toney today. Forget Oshimen, his wage demands are untenable for the club.
