Latest: Why Osimhen could accept lower Chelsea wages, Napoli ready to accept permanent bid

We still think it’s a deal that’s potentially too big to happen, but there is no denying that Chelsea appear to be in the race for Victor Osimhen. All the papers are saying it, all the insiders are saying it; in Italy and in England.

Ben Jacobs has just dropped in to give a little update on how a potential deal might be formulated. The striker only has a year left on his deal, so their priority is to sell, and Chelsea know it.

A loan is still potentially on the cards – but only one with an obligation to buy at the end of it. According to Jacobs, Napoli will consider that or a permanent sale.

The lowering of Osimhen’s asking price has made it just about feasible for Chelsea to afford him, especially if they can use the loan-then-buy formula to push the actual payment onto next year’s books. Right now, the problem seems much more on the personal terms.

Situation walking in to Chelsea

After years of being super in demand and promised all the riches of the world when he makes his big move, it must be hard for Osimhen to swallow the fact that he’s simply not going to get the money he had hoped for all those years. There’s just not enough interest in him given Napoli’s asking price, and given the general deflation of the market this summer.

Right now the only way he’s going to get the payday he has been hoping for is a move to Saudi Arabia. If he wants to stay in Europe – unless PSG come in with a serious late offer – Chelsea look like the only option. That might ultimately make him crumble in terms of his wage demands, allowing him to fit into our structure and pull off a superb swoop.
