“Like Championship Manager” – Carragher rants Chelsea are “obsessed with buying players”

Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has gone on a bit of a rant about Chelsea’s transfer operations since the new owners came in, and has especially honed in on the last few windows.

Carragher is not placing the blame on the Chelsea owners though, he is firmly placing the blame on those underneath him making the transfer decisions at the club, of whom we know to be Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley as Chelsea’s co-sporting directors.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea will make SECOND Oscar Bobb approach, closing on Grabriel Mec!!

Chelsea’s owners have seemingly just placed their entire trust in these two to rebuild the Chelsea squad, and they’ve rightfully come under fire a lot.

Playing Championship Manager

Carragher’s rant hits the nail on the head

Forgive Carragher, he comes from a generation when Football Manager was called Championship manager! but he has a point with what he’s saying…

On the latest episode of The Overlap, as cited on X today, Carragher said:

“The PSR reasons, people keep saying ‘oh we’ve got to sell Conor Gallagher, we’ve got to sell a local player’, just stop buying players! We all do it don’t we, Sky Sports News on and you look at the bottom to see who’s buying who, it’s always Chelsea. £20m for this player, and they’ll buy a goalkeeper and I’ll be thinking ‘you’ve got a goalkeeper’ or it’ll be a striker when they’ve already got three.

“I think those people – we talk about Todd Boehly – there’s people underneath him who I think do the running of the club, scouting players, they’re obsessed with buying players, and they possibly think that if they’re not buying players, what are we doing? I do get that feeling with these Chelsea people that it’s constantly like Championship Manager.”
