“Magnificent” 18 year old’s future in the balance as Chelsea pursue two elite replacements

Marc Guiu did more to impress than almost anyone else in Chelsea’s preseason this year.

That isn’t to say he was the best player on the tour of the USA and the training before and after it by any stretch of the imagination. But in terms of players who played more (and better) than one might have expected, he was top of the list.

The striker showed his amazing work rate and his ridiculously developed physique for such a young player. With Nicolas Jackson out until the very end of preseason, Guiu got a lot of minutes, starting with friendlies taking place not long after he signed. After his debut in our first game of preseason against Wrexham, the Spanish media called him “magnificent” for his all action performance.

Guiu in the dark with the rest of us

Overall it’s been a whirlwind summer for him – but we still don’t know what twists and turns could be yet to come.

His future is really hanging in the balance right now. Chelsea are being credibly linked with moves for both Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney right now, after a long summer of looking like neither would end up coming close to a move to Stamford Bridge, it now looks very possible we sign one of them just before the deadline this weekend.

Where does this leave Guiu? In a difficult position, for sure. Even in the best case scenario where things progress quickly with one of the major striker moves, it won’t be done until very near to the end of the window.

That means Guiu, currently lined up to be our backup striker for the rest of the season, could be shifted out on a last minute loan deal without much warning. We wonder how he feels now, watching the transfer news trickle in – is he desperate to be Jackson’s backup for the year, or does he fancy a season playing regularly somewhere?
