Former Chelsea boss agrees to take shock new job

Former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to become the new coach of the United States men’s national team according to The Athletic.

Pochettino was named Chelsea manager last summer on a two year contract with the option of a further year and despite guiding the team to a top six finish and a return to European football he was dismissed earlier this summer.

Enzo Maresca has subsequently taken over the Stamford Bridge hot seat but it appears the Argentine will be back in work imminently.

Pochettino agrees to become United States coach

As per initial reports in America and subsequently reported by The Athletic and Matt Law, Pochettino has agreed to become the new coach of the United States men’s national team.

Whilst the deal hasn’t been finalised or announced yet it would appear quite the coup to get a manager of his stature and quality ahead of the World Cup in 2026.

Although Pochettino has never been in charge of a national team he has a wealth of experience having managed the likes of Southampton, Chelsea, Tottenham and Paris Saint Germain.

Pochettino wasn’t the most popular among the Chelsea fan base last season, and some never accepted him because of his Spurs links, but he did get the team playing well towards the end of the campaign.

The writing seemed to be on the wall for the 52-year-old as he became increasingly outspoken in his press conferences towards the end of the season and a parting of ways, whilst still somewhat of a surprise seemed inevitable.

Turning his hand to international management could suit the Argentine well, but this is a high pressure job and he will be tasked with preparing the team for a home World Cup and likely through the tournament as well providing everything goes well.
