Reasons for collapse of €21m dodgy deal explained – player’s doubts and UEFA fears

Given the utter chaos of last night’s transfer window and the weeks building up to it, there were bound to be some embarrassing stories emerging from the chaos – and so it has proved.

For every successful last minute deal forged to get a player off the books there was another which failed and there are going to be some very unhappy faces in various group chats today.

One player who has not seemed to have a plan or a pathway since the day he arrived at the club is Deivid Washington. Not good enough for the first team, not experienced enough for a good loan, and too expensive to play in the youth teams, he had a bit of a wasted season last time out – and looks set to repeat it.

Washington left stranded once again

Earlier in the day yesterday there were claims that he was going to move to our sister club Strasbourg. In fact, there was a lot of eyebrow raising about the idea that we would get €21m for a player who signed for closer to €16m a year ago.

In the end the deal didn’t happen, and there were whispers last night that that was because Chelsea’s ownership were worried about being investigated for dodgy dealings by selling a player from one club to another.

L’Equipe double down on those claims, and add the fact that Washington wasn’t keen on the idea of heading to France to fight a relegation battle in a country he doesn’t know. It’s one thing to be sent on loan, a permanent move is much more of a commitment.

There are still a few days left in the transfer market in the Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey, so keep your eyes peeled. A loan move there might be best for everyone.
