Chelsea ace opens up on how happy he is with role under Enzo Maresca

Robert Sanchez believes last Sunday’s win against Wolves can be a starting point to build on and also revealed how much he’s enjoying his role under Enzo Maresca.

After losing their opening game of the season to Manchester City the Blues faced a difficult trip to Molineux, where they hadn’t won since 2019.

However, Maresca’s men ended that streak in emphatic fashion as they fan riot in the second half with Noni Madueke grabbing a hat-trick and Joao Felix scoring on his debut for the club.

A lot has been made of the importance of the goalkeeper in Maresca’s way of playing and many were surprised when it was reported that Sanchez would be the club’s number one.

The Spaniard has struggled following his move from Brighton last summer and lost his place in the side to Djordje Petrovic through injury and didn’t get it bacK.

There were further question marks surrounding his future when the club signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal with Maresca’s style of play specifically in mind.

However, Sanchez has started both Premier League games and had a solid afternoon against Wolves, playing a key role in Cole Palmer’s goal.

Maresca likes the team to build from the back but Palmer’s goal came about from a route one long kick from Sanchez and he admitted it was something they had been practicing.

“We had been practising that, but obviously Wolves had their team quite high up so we had the opportunity with Nicolas’ run to put it in behind,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“At the end of the day, we want to build up from the back and play, but we also want to find the spare man, whether that’s at close range or in behind.”

Sanchez also detailed how much he’s enjoying his role under the Italian and how comfortable he feels.

“We speak about a lot of things and I feel really comfortable in this position,” he added.

“I know that’s what he likes his goalkeeper to do since he arrived, so I’m very happy with what I’m doing, Maresca is happy and we’re going to keep doing the same.”
