Romano bombshell sets deadline for Chelsea’s big summer sale – key player could still stay

Things have reached a critical moment in the Conor Gallagher story. After almost two years of gridlock, things seem to be moving quickly towards a conclusion in the next few days.

He reported to Chelsea for meetings today it seems, and now there are claim and counter claim flying around.

Fabrizio Romano has just dropped a Tweet claiming that Atletico Madrid want an answer on his potential move there “by the end of the weekend,” as they look for clarity on their plans.

Chelsea have accepted their proposal – it’s just a question of Gallagher giving it the green light. His intention still seems to be to stay – and Romano says the club’s 2 year deal with a one year option remains on the table. Having seen so many of his new teammates get 7 or 8 year offers before they’ve kicked a ball for the club, you can understand the midfielder’s reluctance.

The crux of the matter

To us it’s very simple – Gallagher wants to stay at Chelsea. He turned down moves to Tottenham, Aston Villa and now Atletico Madrid. His aim is to play for us, and if we had offered him an acceptable deal, he would have taken it.

Even now, he’s delaying on the Atletico move, hoping that Chelsea will finally give him a deal he can accept. The briefings that he was given offers to become one of the club’s best paid players don’t ring true – why would you reject moves away AND reject good contract offers to stay?

Let’s just hope the reports about him being banned from first team training aren’t true – that would be a truly tragic final twist in this sorry story. The main squad return this time next week, so we will know by then, if not before, what his future is.

  1. Did anyone watch Gallagher at the Euros??? The fans who have adopted him as a “favourire” simply because he’s homegrown really need to wise up, lol! Conor Gallagher isn’t good enough to be a part of a squad that wants to return to the Champions League. He runs around with tons of energy, but his quality on the ball is a problem considering the style Maresca wants to play. He simply can’t operate effectively in the half-spaces and will prove a weak link if he ever sees the field under Maresca. It makes all the sense in the world to cash in on him now before his value plummets.
