Romano confirms 50% clause which means Chelsea can still cash in on former wonderkid

Fabrizio Romano has just Tweeted out that another one of Chelsea’s unwanted players is on the verge of completing a move elsewhere.

He writes that Tino Anjorin has completed a deal to head to Empoli, with “medical tests taking place today” ahead of a late window move to Serie A.

A transfer fee isn’t mentioned, but Romano does say that the deal has a 50% sell on clause. That likely means that Empoli are paying very little up front, and Chelsea are just hoping that putting him in the shop window in a top 5 leagues means he can be worth significantly more a few years down the line.

Tino was considered one of the top attacking talents coming out of the academy just a few years ago, but injuries and bad loans really hurt his chances and his prospects. The talent is still there, but he needs to play consistently and at a high level. Hopefully this move can provide just that.

Sell on clause keeps fans dreaming

In general, we’re always a fan of a hefty sell on clause like that. Yes, in most cases you end up making more money if you take the sum up front. But this lets you dream that he could yet take Serie A by storm, and bring in another big wedge of cash if he’s sold for a big fee in the future.

It makes it feel like he’s still part of the Chelsea family as we will still be supporting him, not just because he’s a nice ex-Cobham lad, but also because he can bring us more direct benefits in the future. We will be keeping an eye on Empoli’s results and Tino’s progress now. We wish the best of luck to another Chelsea academy product heading out to forge a career.
