Romano reports on 3 teams who want potential €15m striker on loan with buyout clause

Chelsea’s summer log jam is finally starting to clear, it feels.

The whole of the summer has felt quite compressed after the Euros, and it’s taken a while for the market to start moving. But last night we got the news that Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid was agreed, and today Fabrizio Romano has followed up that hot exclusive with a slightly less intense one.

Today the Italian insider has Tweeted on the subject of David Datro Fofana, the striker who is currently training with the outcast and unwanted group at Cobham, but finds himself the target of a few different teams.

Romano says that the Ivorian is “expected to leave Chelsea this summer,” on a deal likely to be a “loan with a possible obligation to buy clause.” He’s got ages left on the long contract when we bought him in a very speculative fashion back in January 2023, so there’s no rush for us to sell him just yet. In many ways a loan which grows his value before we start to get into deciding transfer fees might actually help us get a good price.

He certainly impressed for Burnley in flashes last season in his 6 months there, and we can imagine a few more goals in the Premier League contributing quite nicely to his price.

The interested parties

Romano names three clubs directly as potentially interested in Fofana – Leicester City are said to be “leading the race” following their promotion to the Premier League. Also in the chase are Villareal and Stuttgart. All 3 of those look really interesting destinations for Fofana, and we can see the appeal of each.

Rumours earlier this summer claimed we wanted €15m for him, and if we loan him out with an obligation to buy following that season, that seems like a reasonable number.
