Chelsea face two difficulties in trying to move on current star

Chelsea squad on flight out to preseason.

Chelsea’s valuation of Ben Chilwell and his wages could prove to be an issue when it comes to a sale according to The Athletic.

Chilwell has been at the club since his arrival from Leicester City in 2020 and is one of the most experienced members of the squad.

The 27-year-old was brilliant under Thomas Tuchel in the German’s wingback system and played a key role as the club won the Champions League in 2021, but injuries have really hampered him over the past few seasons.

Valuation and wages could prevent Chilwell sale

Following an ACL injury suffered in 2022 Chilwell has struggled to return to his best form and spent a large part of last season sidelined with a hamstring injury, which limited him to just 13 Premier League appearances and 21 in all competitions.

Upon his return the England international hasn’t looked anything like the player he has been and following the arrival of Enzo Maresca there are serious question marks over his future.

Chilwell is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell has been used sparingly in pre-season and it’s clear Maresca feels he doesn’t fit the way he wants to play and can’t perform the inverted role he likes his fullbacks to do.

The 27-year-old was left on the bench again in last Sunday’s draw against Inter Milan with summer signing  Renato Veiga chosen to replace Marc Cucurella at half time.

It appears the writing is one the wall for Chilwell’s Chelsea career and the club are believed to be open to letting him leave if the right offer comes in.

However, The Athletic have reported that Chilwell’s wages and the club’s valuation are likely to be obstacles when it comes to a sale.

Chilwell was linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this summer as they look for a left back to compete with Luke Shaw, but other than that there’s been no serious links with a move away.

The former Leicester man was named vice captain by Mauricio Pochettino last season, but if he remains at the club it appears he’s likely to have a limited role in the upcoming season.
