Selling £38.5m defender would be a dream for sporting directors – if they can turn interest into bids

Simon Jones of the Daily Mail was writing last night that there is “interest” in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi from France and Italy.

The French centre back played a lot last season, but looks to have been bumped down the pecking order by Enzo Maresca. He was named in our squad for the first team this season in the friendly against Inter Milan on Sunday, but remained on the bench throughout.

The injury he’s had all summer has prevented him from getting up to speed with the rest of the squad, and with so much competition to fit into the back line, he may end up being the odd one out. Even with Thiago Silva gone and Trevoh Chalobah frozen out, there are a number of options at centre back, especially with the apparently keenness to give some of the academy products minutes in the Conference League this year.

Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi in a montage of Chelsea defence and defenders.

A nice idea, in theory

From our point of view, we reckon selling Disasi would be a huge win for the sporting directors, and they’d really be delighted if that were to come to pass. But it doesn’t seem likely.

The problem is that they paid £38.5m for him a year ago, and would not get anything close to that now. We’ve overpaid in the first place, and then he had a pretty average season. Nobody is going to give us more than what we paid – unless we somehow find a team with more money and less sense than us, which doesn’t actually seem possible.

Still, with his long contract still in action, perhaps a loan move that allows him to show what he can do and gets his wages paid is a smart next move, and could set us up for a sale for a decent sum further down the line.
