(Video): Gary Neville says into “obscure and bizarre” decisions from Chelsea owners

Gary Neville’s thoughts on Chelsea over the weekend were interesting, and he once again pointed to the ownership’s decisions over contracts as something he couldn’t get his head around:

“There are things that happen at Chelsea that are slightly obscure and bizarre. The long term contracts which, to this day, no-one can tell me why…. why the owners here think that it’s the right strategy. What do they know that everyone else in the game doesn’t know about the length of contract?”

We’re in total agreement with him here – we have been hoping all this time that there was going to be a grand reveal that our ownership was operating with some secret knowledge and that the plan was all going to come together, but when you see the players who play well being rewarded with new deals anyway, it’s even more mystifying why new signings are getting them as standard.

  1. Are you honestly mystified by the economics, SuperFrank??? Is it really that hard to understand why, if you think you’ve identified the right talent, you don’t want to be forced back to the bargaining table every few years if you can avoid it? It’s really pretty basic, lol! It’s one thing if you want to initiate an extension (on your terms!) for a budding star like Palmer, but it’s quite another if you signed him to a short contract and now he’s able to dictate the terms of the re-negotiation. If that doesn’t make sense to you then I’ve got a bridge I want to sell you and Gary Neville!
