Enzo Maresca made a promise to one Chelsea star during conversations in pre-season about which position he would play in according to Ben Jacobs.

Maresca arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer to replace Mauricio Pochettino after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title last season.

The 44-year-old is faced with a huge job at Chelsea and will be tasked with transforming the team’s fortunes and guiding the Blues back into the Champions League.

Maresca made Colwill a promise in pre-season

The Blues have endured a mixed start to the season and have seven points from four games after Saturday’s 1-0 against Bournemouth.

It’s going to take time for Maresca to get his ideas across and for the players to adapt to his style of play, but he certainly has an abundance of quality at his disposal.

One area where Chelsea need to improve is defensively after conceding a club record amount of goals in the Premier League last season, with things not looking much better at the start of this season, although a first clean sheet of the season was recorded against Bournemouth.

Colwill is going to be a key figure in the Chelsea defence and alongside Wesley Fofana the pair are currently Maresca’s first choice defensive pairing.

The academy graduate is now in his second season with the club, and was used a lot as a left back last season by Pochettino, much to the annoyance of the fans.

However, Jacobs revealed that Maresca made a promise to Colwill during discussions in pre-season that he would mainly be used as left sided centre back.

“Maresca promised Colwill that he would predominantly be deployed in his preferred role on the left-hand side of a centre-back pairing when they held discussions during pre-season,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT.

Colwill has been one of Chelsea’s best performers at the start of the season and he’s also shown signs of  growing into a leader, which the Blues could do with following the departure of Thiago Silva.

If Chelsea are to improve defensively this season then Colwill will have a big part to play and he’s set for a key role under Maresca.
