Chelsea have just announced a new contract for striker Nicolas Jackson, extending his deal until 2033.
This move has been reported for some time, but has only just been made official by the club – perhaps looking to distract from the bad news off the pitch ahead of Enzo Maresca’s press conference later this afternoon.
As with the Cole Palmer extension agreed earlier this summer, it seems likely that this new contract is incentive triggered or has been activated automatically in some way. We suspect Jackson perhaps hit a certain goal or appearance target, or the club simply had an preset clause to add two years and raise his wages.
Jackson has been one of the few success stories coming from these sporting directors. He was bought for a good price at just £32m, has played well and helped the team, and has seen his value increase. If that was the case for a few more players, we’d be less gloomy about the whole operation.
Jackson very happy to be the spearhead of the team
The failure to sign another striker this summer once again means Jackson will be our number one option up top whenever he’s fit, giving him more great chances to play.
His quotes show a happy man, who has shaken off the early doubts and proved himself in the Premier League:
“I am feeling very good and am very happy to sign a new contract and stay at the club,” Jackson said.
“‘It feels great the club has confidence in me. I am working very hard. I am very happy to extend my contract and stay here for many years.”
He also made big promises for this campaign, saying he was injured last year and we can expect more this season:
“I am not very happy with 17 goals because I played the whole season without injuries, but it’s okay. I did good, now I hope to continue and do amazing. I am still in the learning process, learning every day, and trying to improve what I can do, and work on what I cannot do.”
