Chelsea have regret after failing to do one thing in the transfer window

Chelsea have “genuine regret” they couldn’t find a solution for Ben Chilwell in the transfer window according to The Athletic.

Another summer has been and gone and once again there was a lot of activity in regards to players both coming in and leaving the club.

Whilst Chelsea failed to sign Victor Osimhen they did bring in the likes of Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho, and were also able to move a number of players on including Conor Gallagher, Ian Maatsen and Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea couldn’t find solution for Chilwell

There were a number of high profile players the club deemed surplus to requirements and whilst Sterling completed a late loan move to Arsenal with Chalobah doing the same to Crystal Palace, there’s one player who the Blues couldn’t find a solution for.

It was pretty clear Enzo Maresca didn’t see Chilwell as a fit for his system given he likes the full back to invert into midfield and despite going on the pre-season tour of America the writing was clearly on the wall as the left back played just 64 minutes.

However, there was surprisingly very little interest in Chilwell , with Manchester United reportedly turning down the opportunity to sign him, and The Athletic have reported there’s “genuine regret” a solution wasn’t found.

Chilwell is currently training away from the first team squad.

Chilwell has been at the club since 2020 after arriving from Leciester City in a deal worth £50m and his first couple of years at Stamford Bridge were certainly a success.

The England international played a key role in the Champions League success in 2021 and under Thomas Tuchel was one of, if not the best left wing back in the world.

However, Chilwell suffered a serious knee injury in the 2022/2023 season and that’s seemingly when his Chelsea career started to unravel.

The 27-year-old got himself fit again but hasn’t been able to rediscover his form pre-injury and once again spent a significant spell on the sidelines last season with a hamstring injury and other issues.

The left back is reportedly on wages of £200,000 per week and it remains to be seen what Chelsea will do with him, but at this point it seems he will continue to train away from the first team squad and will unlikely play any football until January.
