Chelsea made an almighty effort to clear out their “bomb squad” of unwanted players in the days before the closing of the transfer window last week, but there are still a few big names knocking around.
One of them is David Datro Fofana, who has had a pretty curious career at the club so far.
He was brought in without much of a clear pathway, and that situation doesn’t seem to have changed. He’s had a few flashes on loan, but there doesn’t seem to be much desire to sell him or to loan him or to keep him. Nobody’s really sure what his status is – but he’s not fancied by the first team, clearly.
TeamTalk are today reporting exclusively that AEK Athens in Greece, where the window is still open, have taken a step towards bringing Fofana in, asking for a loan from the Blues. But Chelsea aren’t interested in a loan – they want a full sale. They apparently want £10-12m for the forward, with a major sell on clause so they can cash in more further down the line.
It eventually might reach the point where the Blues compromise and agree to a loan rather than having Fofana sitting around depreciating, but it’s a poker game to see whether AEK pay up or the Blues’ stance breaks down.
Chelsea’s alternate approach
The flashes we saw of Fofana have convinced us a loan to the right place could see him score plenty of goals and raise his value significantly. Given there’s plenty of years left on his contract, a successful loan to Greece might make him a more tempting target in a year’s time.
Strikers are always in demand, and showing you can score regularly (even in a lesser league) is always worth a lot.
