Enzo Maresca explains why Chelsea didn’t sign a striker this summer

Enzo Maresca is pretty blunt and pretty straightforward in his press conferences. He doesn’t mess around, and he doesn’t beat around the bush.

Asked about whether he was disappointed that Chelsea hadn’t managed to sign a striker, despite trying all summer, he admitted that he and his bosses were already looking forward to January.

“We wanted players… but we wanted players we decide [the right type of player], and then the condition has to be our condition,” Maresca explained.

The coach also admitted it was something that he and his sporting directors would address in the next window – he said he “didn’t know” how many games there were between now and then.

He doesn’t seem too despondent anyway – Nicolas Jackson is scoring and if he can stay fit we should be ok. There’s no denying that the lack of depth is worrying ,however.
