“I was in my room” – Chelsea winger on getting some big and exciting news

Noni Madueke’s callup for the England senior team has always been coming – he’s racked up an impressive 20 caps for the Under 21s, so it’s just been a matter of waiting for the right moment to take the final step up.

There was never going to be a better opportunity than this. A strong start to the season with Chelsea lined up perfectly with the appointment of Lee Carsley, his coach from the England youth teams, as the interim manager for the senior side following the resignation of Gareth Southgate.

In quotes on the Chelsea official website, the winger spoke about how excited he was to be in the mix:

“The manager called me about an hour or two before the England squad came out [in the afternoon] and broke the news to me. I was in my room, just relaxing preparing for the game… said I should give him a buzz. I did and he told me that I was in the squad. I was super happy about it.”

“He knows my game and he’s a great manager, a great guy, so I’m looking forward to going and linking up for sure. A few of us that won the Under-21 Euros are going up, so it should be good. It should be really fun to see all the boys, just do our best and show everyone what we’re all about.”

Chelsea trio arrive at perfect time for England refresh

This time around Madueke is joined in the squad by two Chelsea colleagues – Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer. All 3 of them have a great chance under this new regime to establish themselves as regulars. Palmer is doing too well in the league to ignore, plus made an impact at the Euros, while Colwill plays in a position where the Three Lions are still searching for their long term solution.
