Chelsea star opens up on what he realised from his first training sessions with the club

Malo Gusto has revealed what he realised after his few training sessions with the club following his arrival from Lyon last summer.

Gusto has without doubt been one of the best and most important signings under the new ownership, and whilst a deal was agreed in January 2023 he didn’t arrive until six months later after finishing the season with Lyon.

The Frenchman put in a series of impressive performances during his debut campaign and was one of Chelsea’s best performers as they rallied over the second half of the season to secure a top six finish and a return to European football.

The biggest complement Gusto can be given is that when Reece James is unavailable it’s nowhere near as a big an issue at it was in the past.

The 21-year-old has settled seamlessly into life at Stamford Bridge and has quickly adapted to the demands of the Premier League.

Gusto is a doubt for Bournemouth on Saturday after picking up an injury against Crystal Palace.

It’s fair to say that not many people would have expected Gusto to have had the impact he’s had and perform to such a high level as quickly as he has.

The right back has been reflecting on his time at the club and admitted he realised after his first few training sessions it was going to be a different level than he was used to.

“When I got here, from the first training sessions, I understood immediately that it was going to be another level,” he said in a video on Chelsea’s YouTube channel.

Gusto has started the first three Premier League games in the absence of the suspended James, but he came off with a muscular injury in the draw against Crystal Palace and it’s unclear whether he will be available for Saturday’s game against Bournemouth, with James also a doubt.
