Stan Collymore has used his exclusive column for CaughtOffside to lay into Chelsea’s ownership, which he called a “farce” after this week’s events.
Now entering into their third full season in charge, the ownership seems to be falling apart. Todd Boehly’s group of owners have fallen out with Clearlake Capital, both sides want to buy each other out, but neither wants to sell.
And that’s before you even get to what’s happened on the pitch and behind the scenes, where the club have lost a number of long-serving and highly-respected people. Poor results following a colossal investment have accelerated the decline in relations it seems, and it really is a miserable time to be a Chelsea fan.
“Two parts of the ownership structure want to buy the other out after dropping a billion on, to date, subpar players,” Collymore wrote.
“Why would Chelsea fans want either of the parties involved in their club?
“Surely Chelsea have reached the point now where they could find a dozen fit and proper owners who would run the ship properly? — There has been no forward-thinking, no growth and very little performance progression under the Todd Boehly / Clearlake regime.”
Outside eyes have clearest view on Chelsea catastrophe
Chelsea fans will argue until the cows come home about this ownership – although in fact even the side that has been defending them has started to lose faith now that this “civil war” has hit the front pages and massively undermined the idea that things are all going to plan.
It’s hard to disagree with much of what Collymore has to say here. Sometimes outside eyes are what you need to make a more rational assessment of what’s going on in the emotive world of football. We’d love for him to be proved wrong – but so far, so bad for these owners.
Are you kidding, SuperFrank? Not “hard” to disagree with Collymore??? How about the daft assertion that we’ve got a bunch of “subpar” players? Is he honestly asserting that the guys who’ve taken the pitch for us thus far this season wouldn’t be highly sought after by nearly every other club in the league?! It’s a laughable comment on its face. It’s one thing to say the owners having a falling out is an issue or that the results haven’t YET matched the outlay, but it’s patently silly to say our squad is full of “subpar” players. This is just another example of a pundit giving a hot take and “Chelsea News” really failing to examine it critically. IMHO, Collymore’s statement is far enough off base that it doesn’t deserve repeating, but if you’re going to re-publish it at least put it under a little more scrutiny instead of lamely saying “yeah, an outsider probably has it right.”
