“It’s always the same problem” – Former Blue rips into club over one decision this summer

Former Chelsea ace William Gallas has shared his thoughts on Chelsea’s defence and can’t understand why the Blues didn’t replace Thiago Silva.

Silva’s four year spell at Stamford Bridge came to an emotional end this summer with the Brazilian now plying his trade for Fluminense.

Chelsea certainly miss not only the 39-year-old’s quality on the pitch but also his leadership and experience in the backline, and there was an expectation he would be replaced this summer.

Whilst the Blues have a pool of exciting young talented defenders including the likes of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana they didn’t go out and spend big money on a centre back to replace Silva.

Tosin Adarabioyo arrived on a free transfer from Fulham and whilst he does possess leadership qualities and has Premier League experience he’s not a first choice for the club.

Chelsea shipped a club record number of goals under Mauricio Pochettino last season and have conceded five goals in their first three league games of the season.

Former Blue Gallas, who was part of two title winning defences at Stamford Bridge feels the club’s defence “isn’t good” and can’t understand why Silva wasn’t replaced.

“I can’t understand how the club can allow Thiago Silva to go and not think that they need to bring in someone that can run the backline with authority,” he told Prime Casino as cited on X.com.

“The Chelsea defence is missing a top-class centre back. It’s too much to expect Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana to run the defence, they’re both promising players, but they need someone to guide them.

“It’s always the same problem. If you don’t have good defenders, if you don’t have a strong base, you can score goals but you’re going to concede goals, and you will drop points. That’s what happened against Crystal Palace.”

It’s hard to argue with Gallas and on the early evidence of this season it looks like the Blues could concede a lot of goals again and it’s something Enzo Maresca needs to get on top of.
