Chelsea’s out of favour £50m man emerges as top January target for struggling Premier League side

Ben Chilwell is a top target for Manchester United in January as they look to bolster their options at left back according to reports.

It was a difficult summer for Chilwell and after only playing 64 minutes in pre-season it was made very clear to him that he wasn’t part of Enzo Maresca’s plans.

The 27-year-old was sent to train away from the first team squad, whilst Chelsea looked for a solution to his future, but there were seemingly no takers for the England international.

It was reported that United turned down the opportunity to sign Chilwell in the summer, whilst there were some reports crediting Brentford with interest, but nothing materialised.

Once it was clear that Chilwell wouldn’t be leaving he was reintegrated into first team training and was named in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad, although he was omitted from the squad for the league phase of the Conference League.

Chilwell’s only action of the season has been 45 minutes against Barrow in the Carabao Cup last month and it appears it’s going to be very difficult for him to get any more minutes.

It’s expected that his situation will be looked at again in January and Chelsea will look to try and find a solution which suits all parties.

However, according to an exclusive by Rudy Galetti for TEAMtalk, Chilwell is a number one target for United in January.

The report states that United still hold an interest in Chilwell and regardless of whether Erik ten Hag is still in charge they are preparing to make a move in January.

TEAMtalk state that Chilwell is top of United’s list for a new left back, although there’s also thought to be interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

It’s unclear how much Chelsea would want for Chilwell and his value is unlikely to be high given he’s hardly played recently, but the Blues will likely just be happy to get his reported £200,000 per week wages off the books.

Chilwell, who is under contract until 2027 has made 107 appearances for the Blues to date, and played a key role as the club won the Champions League in 2021.
