Danny Murphy names player he thinks is better than Levi Colwill in statement that might surprise fans

Levi Colwill has had a good start to the season for Chelsea and his form has been rewarded with a return to the England squad.

Colwill has started every Premier League game under Enzo Maresca this season and alongside Wesley Fofana the duo are Chelsea’s first choice centre back pairing, with Noni Madueke describing the pair as perfect for each other.

The 21-year-old will be hoping for an improved campaign having played a lot of last season out of position at left back under Mauricio Pochettino.

Murphy believes Guehi is better than Colwill

It was a successful international break for a number of Chelsea’s players with Mykhailo Mudryk continuing his recent good form by scoring for Ukraine, whilst Christopher Nkunku also scored for France.

For Colwill it was a mixed international break as he started alongside John Stones for the shock 2-1 defeat against Greece at Wembley, with England particularly poor defensively on that occasion.

Colwill was replaced in the line-up for the game against Finland by Guehi as Lee Carsley reverted to the partnership that did so well at Euro 2024.

Stones certainly appears to be one of England’s starting centre backs but the other place looks like it could be quite open for the likes of Guehi and Colwill, with Harry Maguire seemingly out of the picture at this point in time.

TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has had his say on the matter and revealed that currently he believes Guehi is better Colwill.

“I did think that Marc Guehi missing in the Greece game, you felt his loss,” he told talkSPORT.

“When he came back in against Finland, although we conceded some chances and looked a bit vulnerable at times, he seemed to always be there or thereabouts to get us out of trouble. I don’t think Colwill is as good as Guehi.”

Both players have come through Chelsea’s academy and whilst Colwill might be behind Guehi at this point he’s got all the qualities to establish himself as a top centre back for England in the future.

Next up for Colwill is a trip to Liverpool on Sunday as both he and Chelsea face their toughest test of the season as they look for a first win at Anfield since 2021.
