Danny Murphy details why one Chelsea star will be feeling a bit disappointed right now

Cole Palmer has had a brilliant start to the season but talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy believes the England international might be feeling a bit disappointed right now.

Palmer has picked up where he left off last season and already has six goals and five assists in seven games and was named Premier League Player of the Month for September.

Despite the signings of Jadon Sancho, Joao Felix and Pedro Neto in the summer it still very much feels like Palmer is very much Chelsea’s main man even though it appears the Blues may not be as reliant on him this season.

The task facing Palmer this season is whether he can replicate or even better his feats from the 2023/2024 campaign which saw him named Premier League Young Player of the year after scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists.

Palmer’s form for Chelsea has seen him become a regular part of the England set up and he was named England Player of he Year recently, with England legend Paul Gascoigne admitting he didn’t realise how good he was.

The former Manchester City started started both games for England in the Nations League against Greece and Finland last week, but wasn’t able to replicate his best form.

Murphy believes that Palmer might be feeling a little bit disappointed after his performances for the Three Lions because of the high standards he’s set himself.

“I think probably Palmer will be a little bit disappointed with his performance the other night [against Finland],” he told talkSPORT.

“He’s set himself such ridiculously high standards, of course. We were all expecting that little bit more in the last couple of games from him.”

Palmer wasn’t playing in his preferred central position for England which may have been a contributing factor, but given how well he’s played he’s allowed to have a couple of off games.

Chelsea will be hoping Palmer is back to his best for Sunday’s huge game against Liverpool at Anfield, with the Blues winless in their last nine meetings with the Reds.
