“If we were able to” – Maresca details what Chelsea needed to do to get different result against Liverpool

Enzo Maresca stated he was happy with Chelsea’s performance against Liverpool on Sunday but revealed the one thing they needed to do to get a different result.

The Blues fell to their second defeat of the season at Anfield with the Reds running out 2-1 winners in a tightly contested game.

Chelsea are now winless in their last ten meetings with Liverpool, but they gave a good account of themselves and can absolutely take some positives from the game.

The Blues controlled the opening half an hour, but went in a goal down after Mohamed Salah’s penalty following a foul by Levi Colwill on Curtis Jones.

Chelsea came out on the front foot in the second half and equalised with a well taken finish from Nicolas Jackson, with Daniel Sturridge describing the striker as pivotal to Maresca’s system.

Unfortunately Chelsea’s joy was short lived and poor defending left Jones unmarked in the box to restore Liverpool’s lead, and despite giving it their best the Blues couldn’t find an equaliser.

The performance of Pedro Neto was another positive and he was a threat down both wings in the second half, with club legend Frank Lampard calling for the Portugal international to start Chelsea’s next league game.

It’s always disappointing to lose, but Maresca was happy with the performance and speaking after the game he revealed what Chelsea needed to do to get a different result.

“I think many good things about the performance,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport as cited on X.com.

“Overall it was very good, to come to this stadium against this team and dominate most of the game is not easy.

“If we were able to maintain the 1-1 for longer then probably the result would have been different. My intention was to come here and play the way we are training every day and that was clear.”

Next up for Chelsea is a trip to Greece to face Panathinaikos in the Conference League, before the Blues look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
