“It would be crazy for Chelsea to not try” – Glen Johnson urges former club to make big move

Former Chelsea player Glen Johnson believes it would be crazy for the club to not try and sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

The Blues spent the majority of the summer pursuing the Nigerian but despite months of protracted negotiations they were unable to reach an agreement on personal terms and the deal didn’t happen.

Chelsea were linked with a host of names across Europe including Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, whilst a deal for Samu Omorodion collapsed at the last minute despite everything seemingly being agreed.

Osimhen subsequently joined Turkish giants Galatasaray on a season long loan deal, although there is a break clause in January.

The Nigeria international’s release clause has also been lowered to €75m compared to the reported €130m it was in the summer.

Osimhen has three goals and four assists in five appearances in all competitions for Galatasaray this season and it will be interesting to see if any club looks to make a move in January.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea’s interest is still there, but former Blue Johnson believes the club would be crazy not to try and sign the 25-year-old.

“Osimhen going on loan to Galatasaray was crazy,” he told Betfred as cited on X.com.

“Considering that he is available, it would be crazy for Chelsea to not try and sign Victor Osimhen.”

A lot was made of Chelsea not signing a striker but Nicolas Jackson’s start to the season has shown it wasn’t a complete disaster.

Daniel Sturridge recently described the 23-year-old as pivotal to Chelsea’s system and he scored his fifth league goal of the season against Liverpool.

Jackson now has eight goal contributions in eight games, although Gary Neville still believes the Blues need a top class striker if they are to challenge for the title.

Whilst Osimhen would be great the thought of going through that saga again doesn’t feel worth it and there’s also the question of what happens to Christopher Nkunku if a top striker comes in.
