Laurence Stewart has backed Levi Colwill to become an England regular and is delighted he’s playing regularly at Chelsea.

Colwill has come through the ranks at Chelsea and after loan spells at Huddersfield and Brighton he’s established himself in the first team set-up.

The 21-year-old has started all seven Premier League games under Enzo Maresca and is part of Chelsea’s first choice defensive pairing alongside Wesley Fofana, with Noni Madueke recently offering tactical insight into their partnership.

Last season was Colwill’s first in the Chelsea first team and whilst he played well at times he spent a lot of it playing out of position at left back.

This season has seen Colwill play in his preferred centre back role and he’s but in a series of impressive performances, whilst he’s also shown how good a passer he is.

His good start to the season has seen him return to the England fold and he started in the shock 2-1 defeat against Greece at Wembley last week, with Danny Murphy believing Marc Guehi is currently a better player.

There had been talk of Colwill possibly leaving Chelsea before he signed a new long term contract in 2023, with Brighton and Liverpool both expressing interest.

The academy graduate has shown signs this season that he’s growing into a leader and Chelsea need someone to step into the void left by Thiago Silva.

In a rare interview Stewart spoke glowingly about Colwill and has backed him to become an England regular and is delighted he’s at Chelsea.

“There was a little bit of a question mark about Levi’s future when we arrived and what that might be,” Stewart told The Telegraph.

“So, obviously, we’re delighted that he’s here and he’s playing and developing, and I think as long as he continues with the same approach and mentality, which we absolutely expect him to, I think you’ve got another regular England international there.

“So it’s about the players that have come in, but also some of the players that were here and Levi’s a really good example of that.”

Colwill is now preparing for his and Chelsea’s toughest test of the season as the Blues head to Anfield on Sunday to take on early leaders Liverpool as they look for a statement win.
