“They’re going after me a bit”- Chelsea ace feels he’s been unfairly treated by officials this season

Chelsea players in a group huddle.

Marc Cucurella feels he’s been unfairly treated by officials in the Premier League with questions being asked about Chelsea’s disciplinary record this season.

The Blues have made a good start to the season under Enzo Maresca and currently sit fourth with 14 points from a possible 21, but the amount of cards Chelsea are picking up is a concern.

Despite only being seven games into the season Cucurella and Wesley Fofana have already picked up five bookings and will miss the crucial game against Liverpool at Anfield on October 20th.

The Blues aren’t a dirty team by any account and the majority of their bookings this season have been for dissent, an issue they had at the start of last season as well.

Maresca will need to get a grip on the issue before it potentially gets out of hand, as despite their squad depth he won’t want to be without his best players for important games.

Five bookings in seven games isn’t good, but Cucurella feels he’s being unfairly targeted by officials after his success with Spain at Euro 2024.

“You have more impact, people know you more,” he told Cope.

“Being a Euro champion is historic and you will always take that with you. Well, I’ve already been suspended for five yellow cards and I’ve committed few fouls; they’re going after me a bit.

“They jump on me quickly, especially when we play away. It’s normal, we won, I was involved in the goal, I’m playing at their home, it’s normal, they’re hurt.”

Cucurella has had quite the turnaround at Chelsea and after being booed at times in his first season he’s now established himself as a firm fan favourite and is a key player for Enzo Maresca.

The Spain international’s suspension means it will likely be a huge opportunity for summer signing Renato Veiga against Liverpool and he’s impressed in his appearances this season, but with big games coming up the Blues will want Cucurella back in the side.
