Chelsea believe Robert Sanchez has all the ingredients to become one of the best goalkeepers in the league according to journalist Matt Law.

The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £25m from Brighton, and despite starting last season as number one he lost his place to Djordje Petrovic through injury and didn’t get it back.

Sanchez has started the season as Enzo Maresca’s first choice keeper despite the signing of Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal in the summer, whilst Djordje Petrovic was sent on loan to Strasbourg.

Chelsea believes Sanchez can be one of the best in the league

The 26-year-old has a had a mixed start to the campaign and has made a number of errors which have lead to the Blues conceding goals.

He was largely at fault for both the goals conceded against Brighton, whilst he also gave away a penalty in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

His distribution has been heavily criticised and doesn’t look like it’s improved much, and he regularly gives the ball away to the opposition or puts it out for a throw in.

Whilst the general consensus amongst the fans and in the media is the Blues need to sign a new keeper, Maresca has maintained he’s very happy with Sanchez.

The Spain international has made some important saves for the Blues including a penalty against Bournemouth and two brilliant saves against Nottingham Forest to ensure Chelsea didn’t lose.

Many supporters want Sanchez replaced, but it doesn’t appear  that will happen any time soon and Law has reported Chelsea believe he’s got all the ingredients to become one of the best in the league.

He wrote in The Telegraph:

“The feeling within the club is that Robert Sanchez has all the ingredients to be one of the best goalkeepers in the league & that his decision making will eventually catch up with his talent.”

This will no doubt come as a shock to Chelsea fans as there’s very little evidence in his performances to suggest this will be the case.

The Blues will have to hope he improves as right now it’s evident he’s a liability and he will start to cost the team points, which could be crucial in the race for Champions League football.
