“In the future…” – Maresca responds to midfield selection questions as £105m man is dropped again

Ahead of kick off in today’s monster Premier League clash against Manchester United, Enzo Maresca made his thoughts clear about his selection ideas.

In fact, you didn’t even have to hear his quotes to understand his intentions. He played one eleven against Newcastle last weekend, changed the full team for the midweek game against the same opposition, then restored it in full for today’s game.

This is the team he likes, on current form, the only question is over which of his two right backs he plays at left back and which at right back. Malo Gusto and Reece James’ versatility has been used in both directions, and on both sides. As Maresca explained, it’s just a case by case basis of when he uses each:

“Malo is doing well with us, also because he’s helping a lot in terms of the process, playing in different positions. We use him a little bit different depending on the game plan, but he’s doing fantastic with us,” Maresca said to the Sky Sports cameras.

Gusto has had some criticism for his form, but the way he’s shunted around to help the team is a big factor in that.

Maresca explains difficult midfield decisions

The Chelsea coach also gave some insight into what his midfield setup meant for this team:

“They give balance overall, offensive and defensive. Even in the previous games when Romeo was injured and we went with Enzo, we tried to do the same. So in this moment it’s Romeo and Moi, but that does not mean that in the future it will always be the same.”

Dropping the £105m Enzo Fernandez has been one of the trickiest decisions that the coach has had to make in his time as Chelsea boss so far, and he needs the performances and results to validate it. Graham Potter has given his backing to the decision, as have most fans.

But how to the men who signed Enzo feel?
