“Poor decision making and heavy touches” – Chelsea star slammed and won’t be getting starting place back soon

Another editions of the UEFA Nations League came to an end last night, with the biggest game without doubt the match between Italy and France.

With many players across the continent having pulled out of this international break, it was the backups’ delight at the San Siro. For some of those players, these minutes provided a vital lifeline – and for nobody was that more true that Christopher Nkunku.

Just a few months into his second season at Chelsea and there are already major rumours about a departure for the former RB Leipzig man, who can’t get in the team at the moment. This trip to play with Les Bleus was a welcome reprieve for him, although it didn’t really go to plan.

Nkunku fails to shine despite everything set up for him

France won 3-1 in the end, but Nkunku wasn’t able to take advantage of a seemingly perfect position as the link man behind the strikers. Get French Football News assessed his performance thus:

“The Chelsea forward was tasked with providing the link between a revamped midfield and the two-man frontline. While he took up some promising positions in between the lines, some poor decision-making and heavy touches rendered many of his involvements futile.

“Les Bleus ultimately suffered from a lack of creativity going forward – in the same vein as the majority of their games since the start of Euro 2024 – which the their revitalised midfield three largely made up for on Sunday.”

His most notable moment was a hopeful shot from distance early in the second half.

It was going to take more than just an impressive showing for his country to persuade Enzo Maresca to pick him, and Nkunku certainly isn’t going to force Cole Palmer out of position or Nicolas Jackson out of the team playing like this.
