Chelsea’s latest result has left the club in a precarious position.
Defeat to Brighton on Friday night, combined with wins for Man City and Bournemouth, mean the Blues have been shunted down to 6th.
A glance at jojobet official website shows what all the bookies are showing – the Blues have seen their odds of reaching the top 4 slip once again. What looked almost certain just a few months ago is now looking very much up in the air.
We’re been getting mixed messages over whether reaching the top actually IS our objective – Enzo Maresca claimed this week he had been told he needed to reach that level within his first two years, while Malo Gusto said on the club website it was the objective for this year.
Whatever is being said, it’s very clear that getting top four SHOULD be the objective, after so much money spent (and this project is now 3 years old, let’s not forget). To compound that, we were within a point of first place at Christmas. When that’s the case, preseason predictions should be ignored – we were that high up with half the season played, we can’t be dropping below 4th by May, that would be a disgrace.
It’s looking like an increasingly difficult challenge. This team had enough problems already, but losing both of its strikers to injury last week has seriously compounded things. Now we’ve got dodgy goalkeepers, timid defenders, no depth in midfield, wingers who don’t score or assist and a pair of injured strikers.
Meanwhile Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Bournemouth all look capable of beating anyone on their day – including us.
Everything which looked rosy not long ago is now looking very gloomy indeed as we seem to repeat our cycle once again.
To make things worse, the week we had between our FA Cup and Premier League losses to Brighton showed no signs of improvement. Enzo Maresca had a week on the training pitch without Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu, but didn’t seem able to come up with a single tactical shift that might help.
We saw the exact same thing as the previous game – Christopher Nkunku dropping deep, crowing Cole Palmer’s space and offering nothing up top to stretch the game. We hope that something a little more creative comes up this week – we literally can’t stand to watch another minute of the passive garbage that the team has produced in their last 180 minutes of action.
