Chelsea have slumped to a painful defeat on Saturday against Sunderland, and the rest of the weekend has been spent turning those 90 minutes over in our minds.

Where to begin? Robert Sanchez had very little to do in the game, and he’s had a quiet few weeks in fact, which is always good. But you can’t help but think he could have done more at the long throw which Sunderland equaliser from. Yes it’s crowded, but Sanchez’s speciality is crosses and he’s got to use his big frame to clear people out and get to that ball.
In defence, the obvious error came at the end when both Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo stood off Brian Brobbey and let help arrive for the striker. That’s how Sunderland scored the winner. Blame has been put on both, but whoever you choose as the main scapegoat, it’s obvious that it was just criminal hesitance from the defence as a whole. The lack of a solid leader back there has never been more obvious.
In midfield, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were able to keep control of the game, but not offer much more. The tempo was so slow that no attacking moves really developed. Sunderland were not only able to get back into their shape every time, they were even effectively resting and taking a breather as we passed the ball sideways.
Out wide, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto did so well to combine for the opening goal and then went so quiet. The slow tempo meant they never had a on on one to exploit.
Up front, things were a total disaster. Marc Guiu somehow had 2 completed passes and ten touches in total in his 76 minutes on the pitch. Him leading the line was supposed to open things up for Joao Pedro, but the Brazilian was almost as anonymous. Things actually improved a little when Estevao came on to play in the hole and JP moved up front.
It was just one of those days where everything went wrong – but we can’t afford many more of them, and it’s October already. Last season we built up a lot of points in this period which came in handy in May. That won’t be the case this year.
