Frank Lampard was in a funny position as Chelsea caretaker last season.
He wasn’t there at the start of the season to build the plan, he wasn’t there in January to tweak the squad and give feedback. He came in to a difficult situation and couldn’t make it any better.
Since he left in the summer, the club have doubled down on their strategy, selling off even those experienced players still in the squad when he was in charge. On Monday Night Football today he was asked about his thoughts on that strategy from the owners.
He’s diplomatic about it – but it’s clear he thinks that buying experience was an important part of the puzzle that was missed out on.
