Contrary to rumours that have been doing the rounds in the last few months, the Spanish press are now claiming that Barcelona are NOT interested in taking David Luiz from SW6.
The turn of events came after one Spanish paper claimed that the reported £32 million price tag Chelsea had slapped on the Brazilian was “outrageous”, and that Barcelona had withdrawn their interest.
The news also comes as there were rumours of David Luiz possibly being used in the deal to bring Diego Costa to the Bridge, which would see Chelsea’s man move to Barca’s La Liga rivals Atlético Madrid.
David Luiz signed for the Blues from Benfica in Januray 2011, on the same day as Fernando Torres, on a five-year contract and for a deal costing the London club £21.3 million.
However, the centre back come defensive midfielder has enjoyed a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, struggling to hold down a starting spot but also putting in brilliant performances against the likes of Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final.
The reports will be treated with mixed emotions by Chelsea fans, after Luiz has established himself as a real fan-favourite for his off-field behavior, as well as performing well in a midfield role this year, but some would surely like to see him go somewhere he can start every week.
Chelsea rejected an offer from Barcelona, worth a reported £15 million pounds, last summer.
A move may still be on the cards to the Spanish giants, especially with a likely change of manager for Barca over the summer. If not, PSG are also a club interested in taking the Brazilian to France.
A deal before the World Cup, in 30 days time, looks unlikely as David Luiz will now want to focus on performing for his beloved Brazilian national side.
