No fewer than eight Chelsea players have managed to grab a goal for their country over the weekend as their teams prepare for the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.
There has been a lot of interest for Chelsea fans even without the Premier League, as they have been able to watch many of their favourite players get on the score sheet for their respective countries this weekend.
It started on Friday evening, when Chelsea centre-half and Player of the Year nominee Gary Cahill got the second in a 3-0 victory for England over Peru with a towering header at Wembley. Former Blue Daniel Sturridge and Everton defender Phil Jagielka got the other two.
Cahill’s fellow Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic scored a clever header for Serbia as they laboured to a 1-1 draw against Panama in Chicago. Nemanja Matic completed the full 90 minutes for the Serbs.
Troubled frontman Fernando Torres scored from the spot for Spain in their 2-0 victory over Bolivia on Saturday, before an awful miss. However, he did enough to earn a call up to Spain’s final 23-man World Cup squad along with Cesar Azpilicueta.
Belgian compatriots Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku also enjoyed international success. Lukaku followed up a great hatrick against Luxembourg on Monday with one of the two goals for Belgium in a comfortable 2-0 over Sweden, with Chelsea’s Player of the Year Eden Hazard getting the second, a well worked goal with an explosive finish.
January signing Mohamed Salah netted the first of Egypt’s two goals as they threw away a 2-0 lead at the hands of Chile, who eventually came out 3-2 winners from the game. The winger broke the offside trap and, with his pace, evaded the defenders before a cool finish.
Finally, Blues winger Andre Schurrle put Germany 2-1 infront in his side’s 2-2 draw with Cameroon with a tap in after great work by Arsenal’s Podolski.
Seemingly departing striker Samuel Eto’o had given the African side a shock lead, with all four goals coming in the second half. The striker scored a scrappy looking goal before performing his infamous ‘Old Man’ celebration, as his war of words with Mourinho goes on.
Chelsea fans will certainly look toward the World Cup with increasing interest as the players they watch week in and week out perform on the biggest stage of them all, and goals flying in from all angles can only be a good thing for Mourinho, right?
Who are you most looking forward to watching at the World Cup, starting in just 10 days time?
