Ryan Bertrand heads out on loan

Ryan Bertrand will spend the upcoming season away from Stamford Bridge, as he has agreed to join Southampton on loan.

The left-back impressed on loan at Aston Villa last season but Jose Mourinho clearly feels he is in need of more regular first team football before he breaks into the Chelsea ranks.

Bertrand had been a reported target for Liverpool as they look for a new left-back, but Southampton are looking to rebuild after some high profile departures.

Unconfirmed reports state that there is an option in the loan deal that gives Southampton the opportunity to sign the left-back at the end of the forthcoming season.

The 24 year old famously made his Champions League debut on that night in Munich, but has failed to nail down a first team spot at Stamford Bridge.

The recent arrival of Filipe Luis all but confirmed that Bertrand would be leaving the club one way or another this summer.

Speaking of his loan move, Bertrand said:

This is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that’s moving in the right direction.

“I had a lot of options and a lot of interest but in my mind this was the perfect decision”, he added.

“With club’s set-up, the manager it has coming in and the ethos it has, I thought this was a perfect match.”
