Jose Mourinho has revealed that he will be experimenting with having two strikers on the pitch at once next season, and that Fernando Torres will stay.
Chelsea lined up last season with the single striker up front from the start, usually Samuel Eto’o, and struggled to take chances that came their way.
We have the squad we want and, I repeat, the club was fantastic in the way they worked so hard [to sign new players].
“We are happy, and we trust them. We did the job very well. We are outside the market now.”
Mourinho hinted that the three strikers currently at the club – Costa, Drogba, and Torres, would be the three that Chelsea would begin the season with, meaning Torres survives another season at the club.
The other good thing is we have not just Diego – we also have Drogba and Torres. I also know because of Fernando’s great mentality he is ready to work the way he did today.
“We can work and play with two of them at the same time. We are preparing things and we are working on things where it is possible to have two of them on the pitch.”
“We’ve three strikers, so Torres isn’t for sale”, another source quotes.
Romelu Lukaku left the club yesterday after not being assured of a first team place with the return of Didier Drogba to the club, and Mourinho wished the Belgian striker good luck at Everton.
The news that Mourinho plans to line up with two strikers next season certainly points toward a change of formation as the squad really starts to take shape as pre-season continues.
