In the last couple of months there has been lots of speculation surrounding a new contract for Hazard at Chelsea. Hazard currently has 3 years remaining on his current contract but there are rumours that Eden and Chelsea want to extend his stay until 2019.
Hazard arrived at Chelsea from Lille in the summer of 2012 and has improved dramatically in that time. The 23 year old is arguably the best player in the Premier League but still has many more years to improve and become one of the best in the world.
There are signs of a new contract; not just rumours. In Chelsea’s press conference before our home match against Schalke in September, Mourinho hinted how he’s determined to see him extend his contract:
‘He’s a player we want to keep. It’s true Chelsea is trying to have an agreement for a new contract. It will be a question of time. It will end with a new contract. He wants to commit to us and we want to commit to him for the future.’
However Hazard has also spoken on the rumours over his future. He told Belgium newspaper Le Derniere Heure earlier this season:
‘Of course in football you never know, but I am under contract with Chelsea and I want to stay there, the rumours exist to sell newspapers. Moreover, I am in discussions with Chelsea for a new contract.
It is only the beginning of the talks right now so we have time, but the fact that Chelsea have offered me a new deal means they have a lot of confidence in me that I can do a good job and that they can count on me. PSG never made any suggestions to me personally.’
Hazard also took over the important number 10 shirt at the start of the season, another hint that he wants to pledge his future to Chelsea.
Negotiations have been taking place for a while now with little action in recent weeks but hopefully he will follow Oscar and Courtois’ footsteps in signing a new deal soon.
